8 added to Safety Patrol Hall of Fame

Eight students from the central Pennsylvania region were honored recently during the ninth annual AAA Central Penn School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame Dinner.

They are: Megan Esterbrook, Lincoln Elementary, Ephrata Area School District; Hannah Yoder, Akron Elementary, Ephrata Area School District; Taylor LaSon, Nitrauer Elementary, Manheim Township School District; Lexie Lantz, Hans Herr Elementary, Lampeter-Strasburg School District; Amanda Sheetz, Paxtonia Elementary, Central Dauphin School District; TJ Osborne, Paxtonia Elementary, Central Dauphin School District; Sydney Hernandez, Northside Elementary, Mechanicsburg School District; and Dakota Trego, Fermanagh-Mifflintown Elementary, Juniata County School District.

These Safety Patrollers enjoyed a night of recognition and praise from AAA Central Penn and guest speaker, Myrna Delgado, Chief, Division of Student and Safe School Services PA Department of Education. At the April 29 dinner, Delgado offered her congratulations to the inductees and thanked them for their service to both their school and community. Delgado expressed the importance of volunteerism.

"We could all learn something from these young people. They volunteer their time every day, selflessly, to keep their peers safe. Their dedication to their job is very admirable," she said.

The evening was emceed by AAA Central Penn Traffic Safety Manager Dorie Weik, who started the Hall of Fame program in 1998.

"I wanted to create a program that would give Safety Patrol advisors a way to recognize their best patrollers. Some kids take this job very seriously and demonstrate incredible leadership skills while gaining the respect of their peers. That kind of behavior deserves acknowledgement." The eight prestigious inductees were joined by their parents, their Safety Patrol advisors, principals and a representative from their local police department.

All inductees received engraved acrylic awards, certificates of achievement, $50 U.S. Savings Bonds and a goodie bags filled with coupons and gifts from local businesses. Plaques with their names a school pictures will be on display at their local AAA office until April 2007 upon which time their names will be added the AAA Central Penn School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame Honor Roll on display at the Estelle Drive office in Lancaster.
