Lancaster County Art Association: Two Exhibits: "Danielle Peters": An exhibit of paintings will be on display in the Steimetz Gallery, of Lancaster County Art Association, 149 Precision Avenue, Strasburg. "Dale Ziegler: A Retrospective". Sixty-two years of drawings and watercolors by Dale Ziegler will be in the Kauffman Gallery. Both exhibits open Sunday, March 30. Admission is free. Paul Stewart was a resident artist at Mulberry Art Studios for 13 years, and the gallery is thrilled to have this exceptional artist return with his collection of photography and colored pencil work for an exhibit. Tracy Feldman's exhibit, Water Works, is a collection of her recent acrylic and oil paintings related to the theme of water and/or the sea. They will be on display during Downtown Lancaster's Spring Artwalk, at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 North Mulberry Street, Lancaster. Artwalk hours are Friday 5:00 - 8:00pm, Saturday 10:00am - 6:00pm, and Sunday noon - 5:00pm. Other artists whose works will be on display during Artwalk include Back From Space, the cosmic art exhibit from local artist Burt Aulisio, Matthew Murray, Tim Nies, Paul Stewart, Jeff Kromer and more.

"Life in the Manor," a visual survey of the history of Martic Township from the early 18th century to the present, will be presented at the Conestoga Area Historical Society's museum building, 51 Kendig Road, Ehrlich Park, from 1:00 - 4:00pm Saturdays and Sundays. Robert Forrey is bringing his latest collection, More Colors, to the Mulberry Ballroom at Mulberry Art Studios this May. More Colors consists of large-scale acrylic paintings loaded with color, designed to pull the emotion out of the viewer. The public is invited to come out and meet the artist at a First Friday opening reception on May 2 from 5:00 - 8:oopm. Two Sunday receptions will be held from 1:00 - 4:00pm on May 4 and 11. Mulberry Art Studios holds gallery hours weekdays from 10:00am - 4:00pm with evenings and weekends available by appointment, and is located at 19-21 North Mulberry Street, Lancaster.

The Lancaster Camera Club's Presidents' Exhibit will be displayed in the Louise Gallery at Mulberry Art Studios throughout the month of May. Meet the artists and enjoy refreshments during the First Friday opening reception from 4-8 pm on May 2. A Sunday reception will be held on May 4 from 1:00 - 4:00pm . The combination of the work of these two photographers creates an interesting and exciting blend of styles and topics.

The DOSHI Gallery at the Susquehanna Art Museum, Third and Market Streets, Harrisburg, is excited to feature Us and Them, an exhibition of paintings by Hershey artist Ryan Gilmartin. An artist reception will be held on Thursday, April 3, from 5:00 - 7:00pm. Admission to the reception is free and open to the public. Featured in the main gallery is Celebrate DOSHI, an exhibit commemorating 37 years of the DOSHI Gallery's rich history. This retrospective exhibit will run in the main gallery through May 11. Carol Faill, former Director of the Phillips Museum at Franklin and Marshall College, guest curated the exhibit. Faill served as Director of D?SHI from 1978-1981. Artists featured in this exhibit include Maya Schock, Clyde McGeary, Terry Bowie, Dan Fitch, Gene Suchma, Lawrence von Barann, Bruce Samuelson, Charles "Li" Hidley, Jo Margolis, Mary Hochendoner, Carl Socolow, and many others. Museum hours are: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 10:00am - 4:00pm; Thursday, 4:00 - 9:00pm; Saturday, noon - 5:00pm; and Sunday, 1:00 - 4:00pm. The museum is closed on Mondays. Admission to the museum is FREE through September 2008 thanks to underwriting from the Wachovia Foundation.

The Susquehanna Art Museum will present Celebrate DOSHI, an exhibit celebrating 35 years of DOSHI artists and their creations. This exhibition will not only celebrate Central Pennsylvania's own art history, but it will also help educate the community about its rich past. An opening reception will be held on January 10, from 5:00 - 7:00pm. Admission to the opening is FREE. Carol Faill, former Director of the Phillips Museum at Franklin and Marshall College, will guest curate the exhibit. Faill served as Director of DOSHI from 1978-1981.

The Lancaster Museum of Art, 135 North Lime Street, Lancaster, is pleased to host Where the Wild Things Are: Maurice Sendak in His Own Words and Pictures. This fun-filled, interactive exhibition originated at the William C. Breman Jewish Museum in Atlanta, Ga., and is currently traveling nationally. Mon-Sat, 10:00am - 4:00pm; Sun, Noon - 4:00pm.

The Susquehanna Art Museum will feature an exhibition entitled Treasures from the Attic: Unseen Collections of the Capital Region. This exhibition will explore the unseen wealth in the permanent collections of regional institutions. The Susquehanna Art Museum has borrowed from prominent art and historical organizations across five counties. These include the Historical Society of Dauphin County the Perry County Council of the Arts, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, the National Civil War Museum, the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College, The Trout Gallery at Dickinson College, the Cumberland County Historical Society, the Hershey Museum and others. Treasures from the Attic will showcase a collection of works removed from the public eye for decades and, in some cases, centuries. The variety of pieces ranges from a 1775 scenic view of Harrisburg to creations by modern masters from Europe and the United States. Treasures from the Attic offers a unique opportunity to discover the hidden treasures of our regional institutions. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on May 22 from 5:00 - 7:00pm. The reception is free and open to the public.

Snakes, Rattles & Holes at the North Museum of North Museum of Natural History and Science, 400 College Avenue, Lancaster, invites everyone to look at life through a snake's eyes by slithering through a 69-foot snake skeleton. Feel a snake's skin, investigate how a snake slithers, or play a video game to help a snake get its next meal. The museum is open Tuesday - Saturday 10:00am - 5:00pm, and on Sunday noon - 5:00pm. Admission is $7 for adults, and $6 for students (ages 3-17) and seniors (65 and over). Planetarium shows are an additional $1.50 to the price of admission. The Museum is free for children under 3. Pennsylvania Railroad "Pennsy" Days will feature noted railroad artists, photographers and authors displaying and selling their works at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Strasburg. Not Your Mother's Barn, a collection of artwork relating to barns in a variety of medias from many different artists, will be exhibited at Mulberry Art Studios throughout the month of June. Colorful Cosmos. Join us on the upper level of the North Museum, Lancaster, to view the astrophotography of Daniel Good and John Yecker. Past Time: Photographic Exchange is on display at Demuth Museum, 120 East King Street, Lancaster. The Exhibition features turn of the century photographs by Ferdinand Demuth and photographic lantern slides by fellow Lancaster Camera Club member William D. "Strasburg 275th Anniversary Exhibit": A membership exhibit will be on display in the Kauffman Gallery of Lancaster County Art Association, 149 Precision Avenue, Strasburg, will feature artwork inspired by Strasburg. Awards will be presented at the opening reception at 2:00pm. "R. Neil Gruber": A solo exhibit of photographs in the Steinmetz Gallery by R. Neil Gruber on the subject of Strasburg's steam railroad. Earth, Fire and Form: The Potteries of South Central Pennsylvania is on display at the Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 North Pitt Street, Carlisle. Jerry Clouse is curator of the exhibit that features various potteries found in Cumberland, Adams, Perry, Franklin and Dauphin counties, dating from c.1813 to 1918. More than 100 pieces of stoneware and redware pottery are on display showing a variety of uses, forms and glazes. Also on display is a photo exhibit, County Farm Sampler, archival photographs depicting farms and farm life. They will be on display through the fall. Hours are Monday 3:00 - 9:00pm, Tuesday-Friday 10:00am - 4:00pm, and Saturday 10:00am - 3:00pm. Admission to the museum is free.

May 1-4
Annapolis Alive! festivities, will include a National Towne Crier Competition to Maryland's capital city on May 3. To date, nearly 20 towne criers from the United States and Canada have registered to participate in the 1:00pm event that will take place during the May 1-4 Annapolis Alive! CharterFest celebration at City Dock. Area residents and visitors won't have to wait until the May 3 competition to see the towne criers in action. The criers will be providing a sampling of their craft between 6:30 and 7:30pm at the Maritime Heritage Festival Block Party in the parking lot of Fawcett Boat Supplies at 110 Compromise Street on Friday, May 2. The following morning, Historic Annapolis Foundation is inviting area residents and visitors to meet the towne criers at a ticketed breakfast at the Paca House at 186 Prince George Street from 8:30 - 10:30am. Here, the towne criers will teach children ages 5-12 how to "cry."

The 17th Annual May Day Fairie Festival will be held from noon - 7:00pm May 2, and 10:00am - 6:00pm May 3-4 at Spoutwood Farm Center, Glen Rock. May 2 will be Children's Day. Admission is $10 for adults, kids 3-12 are $5 and free for those under 3. Those who decide to volunteer when they arrive can request a 2-hour job assignment; upon completion, the admission fee will be refunded. Parking will be available on the same road as the Festival for $5. Please note: There will be no parking at the schools or Adhesives Research as in the past. Last year more than 15,000 attended the festival. More than 70 arts and crafts vendors (mostly featuring handmade art inspired by the Little People), performances by Celtic musicians and dancers, participatory Maypole Dancing accompanied by bagpipes, Coronation of the King and Queen of May, pony rides, Fairie craft activities (involves a small fee), a diverse variety of food vendors, Fairie and other Nature Spirit environments to explore, a Natureplace offering a place for environmental, health, animal and other groups to share their vision, Fairie Tea Parties, guest appearances by the Green Man, Sweet Pea, Posie and other Celebrefairies, Woodland Gnome and Elf tours, and more! There will be a photo area for parents who bring their own cameras to photograph their kids with Celebrefairies.

The Ephrata Cloister, 632 West Main Street, will host Building History: Making and Saving Historic Architecture from 10:00am - 4:00pm both days which will include live demonstrations, special guided tours and guest speakers. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for senior citizens age 60 and above, and $8 for youth ages 6-17. Members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates receive free admission with a current membership card. Featured craftsmen and demonstrators will reveal how different architectural features were created. Speakers will host talks in the Ephrata Cloister Visitor Center about different aspects of local 18th-century architecture traits. And, back by popular demand, the Sisters' Dormitory and the Meetinghouse will be opened up for guided tours of the unrestored upper floors. Other walking tours will be offered, including an outside walk of the grounds. Children's activities will be available, including an activity corner and a scavenger hunt. Guild of American Papercutters 20th anniversary convention, "Collection 2008" will be held May 21-25 at the Lancaster Bible College, Lancaster, featuring lectures, workshops and presentations by members, authors and artists. Member's works will be on display from April 4-May 18 at the Lancaster Museum of Art, 135 North Lime Street, Lancaster. Opening reception 5:00 - 8:00pm April 4. An extensive exhibit of papercutting by national and international artist cutters will be on display at the Landis Valley Museum from May until the end of 2008.

The Cumberland County Historical Society will sponsor a guided tour of the site known as Camp Michaux, in Cooke Township near Pine Grove Furnace State Park. The tours will begin at Pine Grove Furnace at 10:00am and 1:00pm. From there, the group will drive the two miles to the location of Camp Michaux. Camp Michaux has been the site of various events since the 18th century. Today, careful examination reveals subtle evidence that demonstrates the variety of activities that occurred there over the more than 250 years. David Smith, Librarian at CCHS will lead the groups through the site and point out the surviving evidence of the activities from the 18th century through to the 1970s. To participate, please register at the Historical Society, by calling 717-249-7610. The cost of the tour is $6 for non-members and $5 for members. Please do not pay in advance. The walk will be given rain or shine. Please wear appropriate clothing. Heavy shoes or boots and long trousers are recommended.

Sponsored by the Strasburg Area Woman's Club, this year's Kitchen Tour will feature many awesome homes in and around Strasburg. Every kitchen will host a local chef, caterer, or other entertainment who will demonstrate and offer samples of their tasty fare. The New Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center will fully open to the public some time during the first two weeks of April 2008, with the exception of the Cyclorama painting experience. The new 139,000-square-foot facility features a new park visitor center, a 24,000-square-foot museum on Gettysburg in the Civil War, a new 22 minute film about the Battle of Gettysburg entitled, "A New Birth of Freedom," the restored Gettysburg Cyclorama Painting, Refreshment Saloon, Museum Bookstore, classrooms and curatorial and administrative offices. Come out for a great day of food, art, antiques and fun from 9:00am - 3:00pm at the Historic Columbia Market House. This show will highlight the areas antiques, collectibles, art, entertainment and crafts. Food will be available from the Columbia High School Class of 2010 parents club. All proceeds will benefit the Columbia class of 2010 Parents Club. In addition to the antiques, and crafts for sale, event goers' are being asked to bring unwanted eyeglasses to support the local Lions Club. Learn about the history of the Cumberland County seat on a walking tour in Carlisle reliving life in colonial times. The County Seat Walking Tour begins at the Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 North Pitt Street, Carlisle, in the education center and museum, followed by a visit to the Old Prison to hear stories of early incarceration. Bring your bag lunch for a picnic at LeTort Park, then stop at the Old Graveyard for tales about Mary Hayes, aka Molly Pitcher, then take a trip to the Old Courthouse and reenact the trial of Lewis the Robber. Last stop on the tour is a visit to the First Presbyterian Church for a hands-on program on the history of religion and the Scots in Cumberland County. Benefiting people with developmental disabilities, the FEST will kick-off Friday, May 10 with a chicken barbecue meal at 4:00pm and bluegrass music entertainment at 7:00pm by The Horst Brothers. Tickets for the Yost chicken barbecue meal costs $8 for a full meal, and $6 for a half of chicken. Drive-through service. Other Friday features include an auction from 6:00 - 7:00pm, face-value gift certificates and baked good sales. Craft and plant tents will be open both Friday evening and Saturday. Saturday's all-day auction will feature items donated by local businesses, churches and community individuals and families. Saturday's events open at 7:00am with a pancake and sausage breakfast sponsored by Oregon Dairy and coffee provided by Starbucks in Lititz. The U.S. Hot Air Balloon Team will sponsor tethered hot air balloon rides from 7:00 - 9:00am (weather permitting). Cottages reflecting their century-old Victorian origins will be open to the public at Mt. Gretna's 24th annual tour of homes from 10:00am - 5:00pm. One of the most popular home tours in Pennsylvania, the event benefits Music at Gretna, the jazz and classical music festival that began in this quiet summer resort more than 30 years ago. Typical of homes on display this year will be the residence of Jack and Jeanine Bitner, the largest "cottage" in Mt. Gretna's historic Chautauqua district, built at the turn of the last century by a wealthy New York industrialist as a summer home and now occupied year-round. Also reflecting the architectural styles of homes that will be open this year is "Heaven," a Chautauqua home restored to its original grandeur by Gordon and Charlene Keeney, who also added an outdoor railroad to the hillside setting; "Uneeda Rest," in Mt. Gretna's Campmeeting grounds, where owners Ted Martin and Dwayne Heckert tracked down and installed original-condition 1920s-era appliances as part of a painstaking two-year remodeling project; "Cocoon," whose inviting porch welcomes visitors strolling through the Campmeeting grounds each summer and also provides a weekend escape for Harrisburg owners Don and Barbara Vayo; and "HappiNest," the favorite Chautauqua escape of Lancaster physician Ed and Barbara Maley, who have drawn on his carpentry talents and her love of art to create this cozy retreat in the woods. Mt. Gretna is home to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua, spawned by the cultural movement started in the late 1800s in upstate New York. It continues as a summertime center for outdoor art festivals, chamber music and jazz concerts, and one of the nation's oldest continuing summer stock theaters. The Voices of Palmyra Spring Concert "Jubilant Song - Traditional Hymns and Folk Songs" will be presented at 3:00pm at Trinity United Church of Christ, Pine and South Railroad streets, Palmyra. "A Jubilant Song" by Norman Dello Joio is one of the highlights of the concert along with "English Folk Songs" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, "Religious Motets" of Aaron Copeland, Malotte's "Lord's Prayer" and the James Erb arrangement of "Shenandoah." The Long's Park Amphitheater Foundation will open its 46th annual Summer Music Series June 1 at the park just off Route 30 on Harrisburg Pike. The 13-weekend season will sizzle with everything from salsa, Celtic and bluegrass to patriotic, blues and rock. The lineup is studded with W.C. Handy, Juno, Australian Recording Industry Association, International Bluegrass Music Association and Dove award winners and Grammy nominees. Plus, the season will again feature the community's largest patriotic concert and fireworks display. All performances and parking are free of charge and begin at 7:30pm. Opening the season will be the Living Blues award winner and multiple W. C. Handy nominee, Big Jack Johnson and the Corn Lickers. Across 13 exciting Sunday nights, the season will close August 24 with the jammin' rock of songwriter, singer, guitar/banjo wizard Bobby Lee Rodgers & The CodeTalkers. The July 6 patriotic concert and fireworks will showcase the legendary 257th Army Band and the percussion concussion of former Lancaster mayor Charlie Smithgall's cannon brigade. Long's Park concert goers are invited to bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs to the park. Burgers, hot dogs, barbecue, fries and ice cream will be on sale. Long's Park is an alcohol-free park. Free admission and parking. All events are held rain or shine, except in the case of dangerously inclement weather.

Hershey Area Playhouse will launch its 2008 season with "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" at Hershey Area Playhouse at Country Meadows on Sand Hill Road at Cherry Drive. Thursday through Saturday performances will be at 8:00pm and Sunday matinees will be at 2:00pm. Tickets are $17 for teens/adults and $15 for kids 12 and under (services charges apply).
