Mexico’s Crown Jewels and Hidden Gems

Because Mexico is so close and easy to get to, we sometimes take it for granted that there is another world beyond our southern border. It’s a world brimming with exotic sights, glorious colors, unique customs and people of unmatched warmth. Modern cities and colonial villages seamlessly blend with mountains, and vibrant rain forests open up to white sand beaches and blue sea. With endless adventure, romance and fun, Mexico is a destination that is sure to meet or exceed every traveler’s idea of their dream vacation.

Most people are familiar with Mexico’s group of major resort destinations, which is a veritable all-star team of hot spots. They think of divers scaling the cliffs in romantic Acapulco, and disappearing into the blue sea below. They envision the gorgeous beaches in Cozumel that look out upon spectacular coral reefs, or the ones in Puerto Vallarta that are home to local fishermen and quaint whitewashed houses. And of course, they know about legendary Cancun, where the incredible nightlife and recreation somehow co-exist with nearby Mayan ruins.

But Mexico is so much more. It also takes visitors back in time to an age of mighty empires and exotic civilizations. Throughout the country you can explore thousands of years of mysterious cultures, where every stone has a story to tell. In Mexico City, a 2,000-year-old mystical Aztec city and colonial Taxco stand in stark contrast to the city’s ballets and many other modern offerings. In Cuernavaca, just an hour away, natural heated springs and colorful bougainvillea gardens are juxtaposed with Spanish accents and the Mayan Pyramid of the Feather Serpent.

Mexico is just as interesting when you stray from the beaten path - with quaint colonial cities like Guanajuato, the natural wonder of Copper Canyon, or the fascinating jungle ecosystems in Riviera Maya. When you visit Mexico, be sure to expect the unexpected, or you might miss a lot.
