March - April 2008 - AAA News Driver Improvement Program Lets You Brush Up on Your Skills Here’s some good news for the estimated 20 million people aged 70 or older in the United States with active drivers’ licenses. Hanging up the keys is no longer the last stop for aging drivers, thanks to senior driver refresher programs like AAA’s Driver Improvement Program that sharpen and fine tune driving skills that may have dulled over the years. Designed for classroom-led lessons, the Driver Improvement Program is conducted by AAA-certified instructors. A study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found senior drivers 70 years of age or older who take classroom driving improvement courses and behind-the-wheel training can improve their driving performance. The research, “Enhancement of Driver Performance Among Older Drivers,” used 126 drivers aged 70 years or older who recorded sub-optimal driving performance scores during road tests. Participants were then divided into two groups, one undergoing eight hours of classroom training, based in part on AAA’s Driver Improvement Program, plus two hours of behind-the-wheel training, and the other serving as the control group. Drivers who took the classroom and on-road training showed significant improvement in their driving skills. In 33 states and the District of Columbia, including Pennsylvania, seniors can qualify for an insurance discount upon taking a course. See the AAA Central Penn web site for AAA Central Penn Driver Improvement Program course schedules and locations.
