March - April 2008 - AAA News Safety of Important Documents Critical in Disaster Recovery A study commissioned by The UPS Store disclosed that 58 percent of those surveyed are more aware of the need to keep duplicate copies of important documents in light of recent natural disasters. Surprisingly, less than 10 percent of respondents had actually done so. The UPS Store recommends copying important documents yearly. Among the most critical documents are birth certificates and financial records, such as wills, bank records, credit card statements, insurance information, social security card and the deed to your house. An Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK), developed by Operation Hope, FEMA and Citizen Corps, to help you organize your information, is available at the Ready America Web site at www.ready.gov. In addition to important personal documents, people shouldn’t overlook items with sentimental value. The loss of cherished items can be equally devastating. For that reason, one-of-a-kind items like cards, letters and photographs should be copied and saved along with legal documents. The UPS Store offers a full range of document services, and when you show your AAA membership card at the more than 4,300 locations across the country, you can save 15 percent off the full retail price of eligible services and products while saving 5 percent on shipping costs.
