The Alps: A Vacation Among The Clouds

Switzerland is defined by the Alps. Stretching across Central Europe, these mountains have influenced everything from the nation’s multiple languages (Switzerland has FOUR official languages!) to its history of international neutrality. For the traveler, the Alps create one of the most majestic and memorable backdrops for a vacation.

When you first arrive in Switzerland, it’s almost possible to hear the exact moment you come in site of the Alps as you hear people’s jaws hit the ground. Even skiers who are used to the Rockies can be heard to exclaim "THAT’S what we’re going down??!!" the first time they see the vertical drop the Alps offer. In much the same way as someone visiting Manhattan for the first time develops a crick in their neck from looking up at the skyscrapers, a first-timer in Switzerland will find themselves gazing up in total awe as they look to where the Alps meet the sky.

Exploring the Alps is quite literally a buffet for your senses! The visual impact is quite obvious as you drive or walk through Alpine meadows. You’ll find the lush green fields stretching out before you with evergreen forests framing them. The effect is quite calming and relaxing. This sense of peace and tranquility only increases as you spy wooden chalets that appear to be right out of Heidi. And the visual beauty is further enhanced by the sounds that are all around you. From the sound of water rushing down out of mountaintop glaciers to the gentle chiming of cowbells and goat bells, the Alpine serenity seems to be unbreakable. Even the sound of church bells echoing down the valley just adds to the whole experience.

Visiting the Alps in early Summer adds another sense – smell. In late spring and early summer, the Alpine flowers create a veritable carpet stretching across the Alps that is a sight to behold. From the classic white Edelweiss to the clusters of lavender Alpine Androsace, you’ll see colors that will make the meadows look like an artist’s palette!

Whether you explore the Alps from the comfort of your motorcoach or on foot as you follow the hundreds of miles of hiking trails, there is no shortage of breath-taking views.
