July - August 2008 - Travel Gettysburg Visitors Center opens The new Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center opened recently and features 12 museum galleries, restaurant, bookstore, movie theater, resource room and educational center. The $105 million center, which opened in April, took three years to complete. The location has moved to Route 97, south of town, to provide visitors with a starting point before they tour the battlefield and other attractions in Gettysburg. Route 97 is easily accessed from U.S. Route 15. More than 1.7 million visitors are expected to enter the building this year. On September 26, for the grand opening, the restored Cyclorama Painting will open once again. For one price, visitors can see the painting and a movie about the battle. Until the grand opening, the Cyclorama room will be closed. The Cyclorama depicts the charge of Confederate infantry led by General George Pickett on July 3, 1863. The painting in Gettysburg is the only complete Cyclorama in North America, and serves as a vivid monument to the soldiers on both sides. The painting was completed in 1884 by French master Paul Philippoteaux.
