The Membership That Saves Money

As the debate about the future of transportation and how to fund it continues in Washington, AAA is working to ensure that the voice of the motorist is not an afterthought in the discussion. Motorists will likely be asked to reach deeper into their wallets to pay for transportation going forward, so it is imperative that those who pay understand what is being proposed.

The future of the nation’s transportation system cannot be approached with the mindset that we can simply repeat, or re-authorize, what we have done in the past. AAA has called for a new vision and purpose for the federal transportation program before motorists are asked to pay more. Among the principles that will guide our advocacy are the belief that motorists must receive direct and recognizable improvements to their travel experience; transportation officials must demonstrate that they are managing resources wisely through transparent decision-making and efficient use of funds; and revenues generated through taxes, fees and other charges to motorists must be fair and equitable and should be dedicated solely to meeting identified transportation needs. Delivering on a new vision will ensure the continuance of what we all know as the American way of life. It is premised upon our ability to go from where we are to where we want to be, at the time we want, via the route we prefer, on the transportation mode that best serves our needs.

This is one of the busiest times of the year for travel and no matter how we plan to get where we are going, we are sure to see a higher cost of travel due to the ever rising cost of gasoline. The cost at the pump has trickled down to many aspects of our lives and so we become a bit more conservative and prudent as to where and how we travel. An important aspect of summer road trips involves keeping your car in good shape for summer driving. Check the engine coolant level and the anti-freeze/water mixture in the radiator; check tire pressure in the morning when tires are cold, inspect the spare tire, check the radiator and heater hoses, check oil levels and remember to change your car’s oil every three months or 3,000 miles, check the belts that drive your alternator, air conditioner, water pump, air pump and power steering. Don’t forget to use your AAA TripTik when planning a trip and be sure to have our knowledgeable member services staff help with all aspects of your preparation. Be sure to check out the items in our travel store to help make your summer adventure more enjoyable.

The Board of Directors, staff and I wish you a happy, safe summer and good traveling, no matter where or how you choose to go.

Wilson L. Aungst, Chairperson of the Board
