Cottages reflecting their century-old Victorian origins will be open to the public at Mt. Gretna's 24th annual tour of homes from 10:00am - 5:00pm. One of the most popular home tours in Pennsylvania, the event benefits Music at Gretna, the jazz and classical music festival that began in this quiet summer resort more than 30 years ago. Typical of homes on display this year will be the residence of Jack and Jeanine Bitner, the largest "cottage" in Mt. Gretna's historic Chautauqua district, built at the turn of the last century by a wealthy New York industrialist as a summer home and now occupied year-round. Also reflecting the architectural styles of homes that will be open this year is "Heaven," a Chautauqua home restored to its original grandeur by Gordon and Charlene Keeney, who also added an outdoor railroad to the hillside setting; "Uneeda Rest," in Mt. Gretna's Campmeeting grounds, where owners Ted Martin and Dwayne Heckert tracked down and installed original-condition 1920s-era appliances as part of a painstaking two-year remodeling project; "Cocoon," whose inviting porch welcomes visitors strolling through the Campmeeting grounds each summer and also provides a weekend escape for Harrisburg owners Don and Barbara Vayo; and "HappiNest," the favorite Chautauqua escape of Lancaster physician Ed and Barbara Maley, who have drawn on his carpentry talents and her love of art to create this cozy retreat in the woods. Mt. Gretna is home to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua, spawned by the cultural movement started in the late 1800s in upstate New York. It continues as a summertime center for outdoor art festivals, chamber music and jazz concerts, and one of the nation's oldest continuing summer stock theaters. For details on this year's event call Music at Gretna, (717) 361-1510. Advance tickets are $12, or $15 on the day of the tour.
